Today, many people still struggle with the understanding of the kingdom of God and its requirements. Many think going to church will make them qualify, or the gate of the kingdom of God is in the church or other religious places. Some also think the kingdom of God is somewhere beyond the clouds. Unfortunately, the kingdom of God is not in any of those places. The Kingdom of God is within you! (Luke 17:21). The kingdom of God is about righteousness, which can only be manifested within you personally, no one can be righteous on your behalf, not even your pastor or your parents. Jesus said the kingdom of God is like a mustered seed that a man took, planted in his own garden (not in another man’s garden), which grows and becomes a huge tree, where birds are also nested (Luke 13: 18-19). Likening the kingdom of God to a mustered seed shows how small it is that it can be within you and how huge it is when you nurture and allow it to become a big tree. Also, likening the kingdom of God to a mustered seed shows that, what is required for the kingdom of God is so small and simple, but you have to groom it, and what is this requirement? Love God with the whole of your heart and love your neighbour as your self (Luke 10:27, Mark 12:30-31, John 13:34-35, John 15:12). Give to the poor in order to earn yourself a space in heaven, do not give to your church building that will later be destroyed by moth, follow the instructions of Jesus and not what you feel is right or what your pastor tells you! (Luke 12:33). When you pick-up these little things (love God and your neighbour, which is the mustered seed), and then make it your lifestyle (which is growing and watering the mustered seed in your garden), then it becomes part of you (it becomes a big tree) and your life will become a blessing to many because you have helped the poor, helpless, widow, orphan etc. (i.e. your tree becomes a nesting place for many birds). That is the kingdom of God.
No wonder Paul said the kingdom of God is not about eating and drinking (Romans 14:17), and Jesus also stated clearly that life is more than food and our body is more than clothing (Luke 12:23), which means there is something special about people who have Jesus, such that they have the potential to exemplify heaven on earth. Do you remember our Lord’s prayer?…your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven (Matthew 6:10). The will of God is for us to exemplify His kingdom within us on earth like the mustered seed. I encourage to start practicing the act of love today, and never close your ears and eyes to the needs of your neighbours and the poor if you can help (nothing is too small to help, at the same time try as much as you can not to hold back). It can be hard to practice this kind of love, but you can start gradually with the people around.
